It is merely with the end up this starts to fall apart, however the slap-up finale rescues they in the ‘red’. Ingeniously staged and you will wisely dialogued, it will have zero higher problem into the way of life off its very unappealing identity.” [ 8 ]

The brand new film’s journalist and you will manager, Robert Rossen, sets up an excellent multidimensional chess video game, to own mortal stakes, anywhere between Johnny, his manager (Thomas Gomez), their boss’s spouse (Ellen Drew), an effective cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and a scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whoever aunt (Nina Foch) worked in the gambling establishment and dated a good corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). The fresh new caustically epigrammatic software, the latest cast’s suavely controlled gestures from love and menace, and you may Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and you may stylishly assertive photo (along with his governmental conscience) get this to pugnacious yet , in depth spectacle a hidden vintage of your style.” [ 10 ]

Ace shows by the Knob Powell, due to the fact a gaming household overseer, and you will Lee J. Cobb, once the a police inspector, including up the score . While the area observe a common pattern, new characterizations was new and shows adequate in order to overbalance. Dialogue was terse and relevant, avoiding the sentimental, phoney touch. Uncommon digital camera angles appear once in a while so you’re able to heighten interest and you will temporarily arrest the attention. Solid teamplay by Robert Rossen, increasing because the manager-scripter, and you will Milton Holmes, fresh blogger and you will representative producer, in addition to aids in making this a delicate manufacturing.” [ 11 ]

It is primarily a matter of seeing Mr. Powell proceed through his paces smartly whenever you are a massive cast out-of actors and stars render your typical support. Evelyn Keyes takes on the great nothing lady who brings about the latest finest in him and you will Ellen Received is the smooth and slinky vixen who becomes your toward jams. Thomas Gomez are greasy while the villain and you will Lee J. Cobb do a unique ready trip since a weary cops inspector just who finally closes the actual situation. A great deal of ingesting and puffing is completed by the all alarmed.” [ 12 ]
